ABC Tour – Cold & Wet Start to Scotland

THURSDAY 16 JUNE – POOLEY BRIDGE TO OBAN

“Welcome to sunny Scotland.”  That’s what I said when we visited here in 2007 and it was a cold, wet, foggy day.  Well, this morning was no different when we crossed the border.  I didn’t get any photos, as we were on the motorway and I had my camera tucked safely away out of the wet weather.  It is supposed to be summer here, but up until lunch time it only reached about 9 degrees C.

However, by the time we got to Glasgow it was starting to clear up.

We saw the wonderful green hills.

We also dodged showers all afternoon, with lots of wet roads, but missing most of the rain.

Such a variety of scenery.

Of course, the road followed several lochs.

We had no idea how far we would get, being weather dependent.  It ended up being a much better day than expected so we got as far as Oban.  This area is Connell, just before you get there.

Oban is the gateway to several of the islands, including Mull.  This ferry was just leaving as we arrived.

It is a really picturesque harbour.

The skyline is dominated by McKeigs Tower, which was built to create work for masons during the winter months.  It is quite impressive.

The evening light was lovely.

And once again, we finished off the day in a rather decadent way.  When you at the seafood capital of Scotland (so they say), you have to eat seafood.  “Locally caught sole stuffed with Barra crab on creamy mash with a smoked cheese sauce and asparagus”.  Yum!  Mick also enjoyed the local Oban Ale.
